“Would rather” is used to decide a preference when making a choice among different options. The positive form is: Subject + would rather (‘d rather) + verb (base form) + than + verb (base form). For example, “I would rather stay home than go out tonight.”
Would rather is also used to express what one person prefers another person would do. The structure is similar to the unreal conditional because it expresses an imaginary wish.
When we want to refer to the past we use would rather + have + -ed form
